A beautiful back garden completed with Luxigraze artificial grass and a stunning patio created in Classicstone Promenade Sandstone. Just a couple of examples of Jamie’s work.
Our Talasey Training Academy (TTA) has gone from strength to strength since opening last year. The courses allow everyone from landscapers, designers and even customer-facing staff in the merchant world to learn new skills or develop their existing ones. We caught up with Jamie Furlong of Norfolk Garden Design and Landscaping Limited to find out how the TTA has helped him and his business. Read on to find out more…
When did you first become interested landscaping?
Gardening has always been a hobby of mine and something I am very passionate about, however, up until a couple of years ago my trade was actually a builder! I then fancied a change in career and decided I would turn my hobby into a job and begin my landscaping career. From this, Norfolk Garden and Landscaping Design was born and it’s growing nicely!
How did you hear about the TTA and which courses have you done?
It was almost by accident, to be honest! Before I started my business, I was involved in a job helping someone else to lay Porcelain Paving, which was supplied from another landscaping company, however there was a problem with the product. We decided to reach out to Talasey Group and contact one of their representatives to see if they could help us resolve the issue, which they did! I was really interested in what they offered and decided that if I was going to head into landscaping, then this was the supplier I wanted to use!
So far I have completed the Resin Bound Aggregates, Artificial Grass and Porcelain Paving courses with TTA.
Jamie completing the Resin Bound Aggregates course and the Porcelain Paving course.
How has the TTA helped your business?
It’s helped me greatly! Not only do I get to use great products in my job, but it’s also provided me with more skills and given me a vast amount of landscaping knowledge! If a job’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well and these courses can provide you with the necessary know how and practical tips to be able to achieve incredibly high quality installations.
The fact that landscapers, designers and even people in the merchant shops can enrol on these courses is great because then everyone is trained to the same standards on the products.
What was your favourite aspect of the TTA course?
The whole experience is great. Not only do you learn new skills and meet like-minded people but you also come away with a City & Guilds accredited certification, which is invaluable in this profession!
The guys at the TTA can’t do enough to help you. The trainers adapt their approach to suit the ability, experience and needs of each delegate, meaning that the more seasoned professionals are really challenged, Andrew (our trainer) went into greater depth with more complex scenarios and aspects of installations for me and a few others.
You get to train on a 15m squared testbed which really helps to replicate site conditions, then once the course has finished they’re still there to help you with any extra advice, as well as offering sales and marketing support!
Also the food is great…they put on a fantastic spread!
What is your favourite Talasey product to use?
The porcelain paving range ‘Vitripiazza’ for definite! It’s easy and efficient to install and has the ability to create some stunning contemporary outdoor spaces, which I find often exceeds customer expectations. I’m actually doing a local show garden in Norfolk over the summer, and this is the main product I will be using. I’m hoping that the experience I gain from this show garden, will help me in applying for the Royal Norfolk Show next year.
What advice would you give to anyone thinking of doing a TTA course?
Get on it! Just book it, don’t even think twice as it is well worth the money! Not only do you learn new techniques and better understand how to apply the landscaping products in different scenarios and projects, you also get that City & Guilds accreditation. This will stand you in good stead against competitors who may not have this. Just do it!
